 Organizing For Global Justice

A 50 Years Is Enough Network Conference

September 23 - 26, 1999
The University of the District of Columbia
David A. Clarke School of Law
4200 Connecticut Ave, NW
Washington, DC

50 Years Is Enough Network: 202/463-2265| wb50years@igc.org| www.50years.org

Why did 40,000 people form a human chain around the summit meeting of the leaders of the world's richest countries (the G-7) in Cologne, Germany? And why were seven activists arrested at the IMF headquarters on Good Friday?

What is the debt crisis? What are the impacts of international debts? What can you do to support the movement for debt cancellation?

What are the roles of the G-7, the IMF, and the World Bank in the debt crisis?

Why do sweatshop jobs abound in Manila, Managua, and Manhattan?

Why is the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting in Seattle? Why are thousands of activists going to Seattle for the WTO?

Are there alternatives the oppressive global economic systems? What are the real-life alternatives and models (local currencies, fair trade goods & services, community cooperatives, etc.) that preserve peoples rights, protect the environment, and create opportunities for jobs and livelihoods?

Join activists from around the world at the No Debt, No Sweat: Organizing for Global Justice conference to answer and explore these and other questions.

From the Opening Plenary through Sunday's rally, we will lay out key issues and then focus on alternatives, develop and share strategies for responding to oppressive systems, learn from and teach each other, work to build the movement for global justice, and celebrate action and resistance in our communities and around the world.

Confirmed Speakers: Carmencita Abad, Anti-sweatshops activist (Philippines); Brent Blackwelder, Friends of the Earth; Delphine Bjiaribe, Association for the Defense of Human Rights (Chad); Dennis Brutus, Jubilee 2000 Afrika (South Africa); Joanne Carter, RESULTS; Camille Chalmers, PAPDA (Haiti); Kevin Danaher, Global Exchange; Marie Dennis, Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns; Zie Gariye, Uganda Debt Network (Uganda); Kofi Klu, Jubilee 2000 Afrika (Ghana); Samuel Nguiffo, Center for Environment Development (Cameroon); Mercedes Osuna, Enlace Civil (Mexico); Seydina Senghor, Jubilee 2000 Afrika Campaign USA-NY (Senegal); Coumba Toure, Institute for Popular Education (Mali); and Lori Wallach, Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch; and many others.
