Come to the DC Metro Social Forum
Build the Grassroots Movement for Social Change

March 3, 2007 at Catholic University, Washington, DC

What’s the Social Forum? Like millions of people throughout the world we are coming together to organize a ‘social forum.’ Until recently there have been few places for social movements to strategize to create a better world. While national and international elites meet to discuss their profit maximizing designs in formal gatherings such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, we will be providing an alternative approach. Since 2001, leaders from global social movements have organized to create a democratic space for popular movements to gather, to envision, and to strategize how to create ‘another world’ – with racial justice, gender equality, a healthy environment, and peace. These forums have been held in Brazil, India, Venezuela, Mali, Pakistan and this year, in Kenya. As part of this global movement, U.S. movements are coming together to denounce U.S. empire and to say ‘Another U.S. Is Possible!’ The first US Social Forum will be in Atlanta, GA, June 27-July 1, 2007 (www.ussf2007.org).

Why a DC Metro Social Forum? Join with hundreds of other DC area residents as we build a movement for social justice. Here in the shadow of the White House and the Pentagon we suffer the local consequences of a world built on greed and oppression. While empire is being built, our schools are being devastated, our neighborhoods are being gentrified, and our rights to adequate healthcare and affordable transportation are being taken away piece by piece. While many imagine DC to be a city of great wealth, we speak to another metro DC – the metro DC that is majority African American and Latino and that stands on the corner looking for work each dawn; the metro DC that changes the bed pans, and makes the beds; that cuts grass, hair, or nails; that builds homes, bridges and museums. Together we say – Enough! A thousand small organizations, a million living room conversations, and a billion acts of resistance every day… it is not enough! We call for a DC Metro Social Forum to build a movement to imagine and create another metro DC.

JOIN US! We seek people from all walks of life – but committed to a new metro DC. We seek students, workers, poets, activists – all are invited to participate in the DC Metro Social Forum on March 3rd at Catholic University (620 Michigan Ave., NE, Washington, DC 20064, on the Red line – Brookland/CUA station). We will have a variety of speakers, workshops, cultural activities – fun and struggle. The focus of this one-day forum is on social-economic justice and equality, the issues and the struggles. Examples include: youth and education, building black brown alliances, affordable housing, access to healthcare, and local-global organizing. Other workshops and themes are welcome. We’re creating a space to learn, strategize and build a movement to create “another metro DC” – join us!

HOW: Some ways that you can get involved include: organizing your own workshop, mobilizing your organization or community to participate, volunteering to help with program, fundraising, logistics, and more! To submit a workshop and to register please use the attached forms, or visit the website at www.ussf2007.org/dcmetrosf
